Yachtsmen to set sail from Granton to Orkney in charity race
Tuesday, 7 June 2011
A crew of charity-minded yachtsmen will be setting off on an epic 210 mile race from Granton to Orkney this Thursday (9 June 2011), to raise funds for St Columba's Hospice.
The crew of 'Peak Flow', a Contessa 32 yacht, is made up of John Spencely - a volunteer driver for St Columba's Hospice who transports patients to and from the Day Hospice - as well as George Brown, Patrick Carnie and Keith Stott. The team will sail nonstop, overnight, and expect to take 2-3 days to reach Orkney. Six yachts in all will be taking part.
The Peak Flow team is hoping to raise £1,000 for St Columba's Hospice. They are inviting sponsors to donate as many pence per mile as they can - anything from 1p per mile (£2.10) to 20p per mile (£42). John Spencely said: "My boat is fully stocked with food and we are raring to go!"
The race, now in its third year, starts at 8pm at the Royal Forth Yacht Club in Granton. The yacht club is also the organiser of the race.
Mairi Rosko, Senior Fundraising Manager said:
"We wish John and his team the best of luck with their race and we thank them for undertaking such a courageous and challenging endeavour to help raise funds for St Columba's Hospice."
