St Columba's seeks adventurous cyclists for Iona challenge

Thursday, 3 February 2011

St Columba's Hospice is on the lookout for adventurous cyclists to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience - The Celtic Challenge. Held over five days from 18 - 22 May 2011, participants will face the test of cycling 200 miles from Edinburgh to the beautiful Isle of Iona in the Inner Hebrides.

The Celtic Challenge is being held as a unique fundraising initiative for the St Columba's Hospice rebuild project, as entrants need to raise sponsorship to complete the event. Participants will get the chance to cycle through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Scotland, passing from Edinburgh to Glasgow, Loch Lomond, Crianlarich, Oban, the Isle of Mull and finally to the tiny Isle of Iona. The Isle of Iona was chosen as the destination for the cycle as it is where Saint Columba, the Hospice's namesake, settled and founded his monastery in AD 563.

Phil Chester, 68, who has been a St Columba's Hospice volunteer for over eight years, was quick to sign up for The Celtic Challenge. Phil has some experience of touring in France, Italy and, last year, in Austria, when he cycled 310 miles to raise funds for the Hospice with a 77 year old friend.  Phil said:

"I've been cycling on and off all of my life, but I only got back on my bike again seriously in 2000 after a long break following a serious cycling accident in 1972. I'm really looking forward to the Celtic Challenge, it's going to be tough to cover almost 50 miles in a day and some of it will be quite hilly, but I've never cycled parts of the route before so I'm very excited. Getting to visit the Isle of Iona will be lovely too, as it's a beautiful island.

"I became a volunteer with St Columba's Hospice when I retired, but I also have a personal connection as my Uncle Jack was looked after there and I was very impressed with the care he received. It's a great cause to raise funds for, so if you're thinking of signing up then my advice would be to go for it, but make sure you do as much training as you can!"

Martin Lawlor, Campaign Fundraising Manager for St Columba's Hospice who will also be completing The Celtic Challenge said:

"If you made a New Year's resolution to try new things or to get fit but you haven't quite got around to starting it yet, then the Celtic Challenge could be just the thing for you! It's going to be an unforgettable experience that will push your fitness and stamina, while giving you the chance to cycle through stunning Scottish scenery. It is also the perfect challenge to share with your family, friends or colleagues. People of all ages are taking part."

To take part in the Celtic Challenge entrants need to raise a minimum of £1,200 in sponsorship, including a £150 registration fee. These costs cover all accommodation, meals and snacks, tour guides and support vehicles, and a training guide and support pack. Entrants will cycle from Edinburgh to the Isle of Iona and will be transported by bus back to Edinburgh.
