Race the Runway: Petrolheads wanted for charity airport runway race
Wednesday, 9 June 2010
'Petrolheads', 'speed freaks' and car lovers alike are invited to take part in a once in a lifetime opportunity on 1 July - the chance to race their car down the runway at Edinburgh Airport to raise funds for two Scottish hospices.
'Race the Runway', organised by Edinburgh Airport, will see owners of a collection of the world's top sports cars test just how fast their vehicles can go.
The 1.8km runway will be transformed into the longest drag strip in Scotland for the event, in a bid to raise funds for St Columba's Hospice in Edinburgh and the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.
This is only the second time Edinburgh Airport has closed one of its runways for the event, which raised £16,000 for the two hospices last year. Organisers are hoping to raise £50,000 for the charities this time around and are offering 96 exclusive spots, each priced at £300 a head.
Mairi Rosko, Senior Fundraising Manager for St Columba's Hospice said:
"If you've always dreamed of racing your car along an airport runway or if you're looking for a unique gift idea for a 'car crazy' friend, then Race the Runway is the event for you. We're delighted to be involved again this year with this fantastic event and we can't thank BAA Edinburgh Airport enough for the opportunity."
There will be six races on the day, with 16 cars competing in each. Each race will comprise of qualifying runs and then a series of finals, with a prize given for the overall fastest time. The races will take place at 10.30am, 11.50am, 13.10pm, 14.30pm, 15.50pm and 18.10pm.
Registration costs £300 per driver. Passenger and spectator spots cost £50. To enter, contact the St Columba's Hospice Fundraising team on 0131 551 1381 or email fund@stcolumbashospice.org.uk.
