Our plans

You've heard that the St Columba's Hospice rebuild is about to get underway, but what exactly are our plans?

Over the next few years, the whole of the extended St Columba's Hospice site will be transformed. In addition to modernising the 30 bed in-patient unit, the Day Hospice facilities and the administration buildings, a new Education Wing housing the Centre for Excellence in Palliative Care Education will be created. Some of the benefits of the new St Columba's Hospice will be:

Improved patient rooms

The number of single rooms in our in-patient unit will be increased from 8 to 18. All patient rooms will be ensuite, have access to garden areas, and will be equipped with the latest moving and handling equipment to allow the movement of patients safely and easily.

Better facilities for families

Every single room will have the space and facilities for extra beds, allowing a loved one to stay close by at the most difficult of times. The number of family rooms will also be increased and a new coffee room for patients and their visiting family and friends will be built.

New education wing

A new education wing will be created at the property next door to the hospice - 17 Boswall Road which will house our Centre for Excellence in Palliative Care Education.

Upgraded facilities

All of our facilities will be upgraded, including the catering, laundry, and administration facilities.

A new 'Sacred Space'

We'll be creating a brand new Columba Room, a sacred space for relaxation and contemplation, for patients and their loved ones. This will have a large picture window overlooking the beautiful views of the Firth of Forth. This is where the 'Time of Remembrance' will be held for families to come and remember loved ones in an atmosphere of peace and calm.

While the physical infrastructure of our buildings and grounds will be transformed, the ethos of St Columba's Hospice and its care for patients will not change.
